Thies & Talle participates in the first annual Travathon

On Saturday, September 23rd, 2017 Thies & Talle staff members volunteered and participated in the first annual Travathon.  The Travathon was put together by the Armadillo Project, which was started by Shelly Hanson (about/our-people/shelly-hanson.html) .  Shelly started the Armadillo Project in honor of her son, Cpl. Travis Nowak, who passed away on November 10, 2016.  The Armadillo Project’s purpose is to bring awareness to suicide prevention (22 veterans a day pass away from suicide), help military veterans and their families during the time a veteran is in the process of military separation from the service and entering civilian life, and to help connect those in need with the resources that are available to them.  The Travathon is a blend of events for every age and ability!  The main race consisted of a 5K run, a 1K kayak trip, a 5k bike ride, and finally an archery shoot.  All times were scored individually with time credits given during the archery section of the course.  For the kids, there was a Little Man Travathon which included a 1K run, 1K bike ride, obstacle course, and archery shoot.  There was also a 1K fun run/walk. The first annual Travathon, which was named after Shelly’s son, and setup with his favorite activities, was a huge success!   With individuals from all areas of Minnesota helping and participating, it was a fantastic way to bring people together for a great cause.  A special thank you goes out to JoAnn Wirkkula (Southview (properties/southview-hibbing.html) ), Connie Havercamp, Lori Broz, and Michael Clement (Birch Court (properties/birch-court-hibbing.html) ), Abby Adams (Birchwood East (properties/birchwood-east-virginia.html) ), Tanner Nowak and Taylor Skalsky (Duluth Hillside (properties/westhillside-duluth.html) ), Ryan Hydukovich (Lakeside (properties/lakeside-manor-chisholm.html) ), Carole Hydukovich (about/our-people/carole-hydukovich.html) , and Kris Clement (Park Villa (properties/park-villa-mountain-iron.html) ).

KaBoom! New Highwood Hills Playground

Across the street from Afton View (properties/afton-view-st-paul.html) and Shamrock Court Apartments (properties/shamrock-court-st-paul.html) , in St. Paul there is a public park and playground called Highwood Hills.  Over the past few years there had been a lot of talk about the future of the playground, as parents had growing concerns about the condition and safety of the playground equipment.  The condition and safety of the playground had also not gone unnoticed by the City of St. Paul Parks and Recreation and Highwood Hills Elementary School.  Everyone agreed that something had to be done, but with limited resources and other pressing priorities, no decisive action had been set in motion until it was decided to apply for a “Build it with KaBOOM!” playground grant. KaBOOM (https://kaboom.org/) ! is a national nonprofit that believes all children deserve well balanced and active play. They focus on areas of poverty and work to inspire communities, and create great places for the benefit of the overall health of children.  KaBOOM! accepts applications from child serving non-profit organizations, schools and municipalities who are dedicated to ensuring that all kids—particularly the 16 million in poverty—get balanced and active play so they can thrive.  The “Build it with KaBOOM!” grant gave Highwood Hills Elementary School the opportunity to apply for funding with a national partner to remove the existing playground and rebuild a new one with the help of the Saint Paul Public Schools, City of St. Paul, community partners and volunteers. As Highwood Hills moved through the application and grant process, the Highwood Hills Elementary School reached out to Thies & Talle Management (https://kaboom.org/) to join the effort as a community representative and partner to assist during the application process.  Several other applications were being considered and when it was announced that Highwood Hills had been awarded the grant, it was due to the hard work of…

Resident Support Specialist

Thies & Talle Management takes pride in providing the highest quality of housing. The pride we take includes outstanding service to all residents. We believe that offering residents opportunities in all aspects of their lives will improve our communities and resident lifestyles as a whole.  This is our mission and to ensure this mission we created the Resident Support Program (residents/resident-support-program.html) and the position of Resident Support Specialist (residents/resident-support-program/meet-your-specialist.html) . We sat down with our Resident Support Specialist, Emily Cheesebrow to discuss her role and how it has made an impact on our resident’s lives and the communities they call home. What is your background in property management? I have always had a connection with housing, and wanted to work in the field in some fashion ever since I started thinking about my career path. I worked for Ramsey County HouseCalls as an On-Call Child Advocate from 2005–2013 until the program was cut from the county budget. In 2006, I was in the Social Services field working at the Greater Minneapolis Crisis Nursery and saw an ad in the paper for the Leasing Specialist position at Afton View Apartments and thought I would go for it. I began working there as soon as I could and loved it! I was later promoted to Property Manager at Shamrock Court Apartments and stayed there for two years during the transition from the 236 affordable program to market rate. I regretfully left Thies & Talle Management for two years and was the property manager at Oakdale Village Apartments. I did stay in contact with some of my prior Thies & Talle coworkers who referred me to this position when it opened. I was very excited for an opportunity to mix both of my passions for housing and services into one place. When did the Resident Services position start? I started in December 2015 before the Turn & Learn. What is your goal as Resident Support Specialist? My goal is to…
